Fifty years ago, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world.  Today, it is an economic powerhouse that ranks as the twelfth largest economy in the world.  What explains this remarkable transformation?

My name is Richard Suh and I am an attorney based in the East Bay.  I am looking for a study partner or partners who would be interested in exploring this question with me or other related questions regarding South Korean Political Economy or Korean Studies in general.

We can set up an informal “curriculum” where we find books of interest, read them and discuss them.  We may want to write short papers on this topic.

I’m open to books and articles written in either English or Korean.

If there’s enough interest, I’d also be open to starting a study group.

50년전에 한국이 세계에서 제일 간난한 나라들중에서 하나였습니다.  21세기에 들어와서 인제 한국이 12번째 제일 큰 경제입니다.  어떻게 보든 이것이 기가 맥힌 일입니다.  제가 질문하고 싶은 것이 과연 한국이 어떻게 그렇게 빨리 발전해왔는지요?
