ABSTRACTWhy is the world in search for the next generation Li batteries? What are the most promising candidates? I will give a brief introduction on the history of Li conducting solid electrolytes, the key component in realizing solid state batteries. Advantages and disadvantages of solid-state battery configurations over the conventional lithium ion battery using liquid electrolytes will be discussed. Solid state battery is a still growing technology sector and has not taken its final form yet. Efforts taken at LBNL in terms of manufacturing solid state batteries using Li7La3Zr2O12 Li conducting solid electrolyte will be discussed.

BIODr. Eongyu Yi is a Post-doctoral researcher working with Dr. Marca Doeff in Energy Storage & Distributed Resources Division at LBNL. He received his Ph.D. and B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering in University of Michigan and Hanyang University, respectively. His doctoral research focused on exploring novel methods to process Li conducting solid electrolytes including Li7La3Zr2O12, LiTi2(PO4)3. During his postdoctoral work, he is exploring architectural control of the Li conducting solid electrolyte to grant superior transport properties during cell operation.
