Welcome
to East Bay Dongari! We EBD volunteers are excited to present our plan for the new East Bay Dongari. We secured a weekly meeting spot, created a mission statement, set the lesson structure and signed up volunteer facilitators. We will be meeting at KCCEB on Fridays. For a program overview, read below. For even more details, go to our FAQs page.
Our Mission
To
create a space for Korean-learners and English-learners to increase
their language skills and build a bilingual Korean
community.
Our Goals
~ To increase our conversational skill level by holding a weekly space for practice.
~ To create a casual, friendly, and supportive environment where we feel safe to learn.
~ To self-perpetuate as a communally-organized, grass roots resource for the community.
~ To foster cultural understanding between American-raised & Korean-raised people.
~ To strive to have a balance between between native English speakers and native Korean speakers.
Our Target Audience & How It Works
It
is impossible for one group to accommodate everyone's learning levels,
so we decided to narrow the focus to fit the needs of the people who
have shown the most interest. All levels are welcome, but these are
the levels we'll be focused on. Please note that both KLLs and ELLs
should attend both hours - we will be helping each other.
If You Are a Korean-Language-Learner (KLL)
The 1st Hour is a tutoring session for Beginning and Beginning/Intermediate KLL's.
This hour might be appropriate for
you if you can speak/understand a few basic Korean phrases and/or you
can spell phonetically in Hangeul and can sound out words. If you
don't know Hangeul yet or don't know any Korean phrases yet, you might
find it too hard. If you are more advanced than a 5-year-old, you
might get
bored.
The first hour will work like a tutoring session.
There will be bilingual and native Korean speakers here to answer any
language/culture questions you may have and give mini-lessons on
whatever you need help with. If you are currently taking a class, you
can bring your homework here. If you're not currently taking a class,
there will be textbooks and worksheets here to give you some structure
to your self-paced study. Having the bilingual people here is an
invaluable resource because most Korean-language teachers cannot speak
English sufficiently to explain the more complex ideas. For the ELL's,
helping to explain language/cultural concepts to the KLL's will help
hone your English.
If You Are an English-Language-Learner (ELL)
The 2nd Hour is conversation practice for Intermediate-to-Advanced ELLs.
A facilitator will select a short news article about current events,
social issues or pop culture. The ELLs will then take turns reading
the article out loud and the facilitator will write the new vocabulary
on the board. Then the facilitator will present a question to the
whole group that will help us start out a conversation in English.
Examples of topic questions are:
"Would you ever get plastic surgery?"
"Do you think the U.S. naval base should be built on Jeju-do?"
"Would you ever marry someone of a different race or culture?"
"Is it a diet or an eating disorder?"
Talking
about these topics will be a valuable way for both ELL's and KLL's to
learn about contemporary Korean & American cultures.
