Severity: Informational
Alert
Health: Health authorities recall 228 million eggs linked to Salmonella infections in the US.
This alert affects United States
This alert began 18 Aug 2010 20:20 GMT and is scheduled to expire 30 Sep 2010 23:59 GMT.
Summary
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have linked a surge in Salmonella
enteritidis infections to contaminated eggs from a company in Iowa. This surge
has produced approximately 200 Salmonella reports every week since May,
compared to about 50 reports every week during the same period in previous
years. As of Aug. 17, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had recalled
approximately 228 million eggs nationwide; the eggs were distributed in the
states of California, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota,
Wisconsin, and Iowa.
The eggs were packed in 6-, 12-, and 18-pack cartons stamped with Julian dates
136-225 (May 16-Aug. 13) and plant numbers 1026, 1413, or 1946. The eggs were
distributed under the brand names:
- Lucerne
- Albertson
- Mountain Dairy
- Ralph's
- Boosma's
- Sunshine
- Hillandale
- Trafficanda
- Farm Fresh
- Shoreland
- Lund
- Dutch Farms
- Kemps
Background
Salmonella enteritidis symptoms usually include fever, abdominal cramps,
and diarrhea, beginning 12-72 hours after consumption of contaminated food or
beverage. The illness generally lasts 4-7 days and most people recover without
antibiotic treatment. However, the diarrhea can be severe, and hospitalization
may be required - especially for elderly, infant, or immunocompromised
individuals. In some cases, the infection can spread from the intestines to
other areas of the body and can cause death without prompt antibiotic
treatment.
Advice
The FDA recommends that the eggs be returned for a full refund and should not
be consumed. This recall only affects shell (whole) eggs packed in cartons;
other egg products are not affected.
